IN a competitive business climate, environmentally-conscious companies set themselves apart.
Congratulations to the finalists in the Environmental Sustainability category of the Casey-Cardinia Business Awards.
Beaconsfield Dental is a leading dental health provider in the region, and has impressively incorporated sustainability measures into their business model.
The building features 60 solar panels, capable of generating up to 100 kilowatts of energy each day. The garden also features an array of Australian plants, with 500 natives complementing the surrounding Akoonah Park.
Double glazing, full insulation, solar hot water, LED lighting and tanks providing water for the garden and toilet are all features that have earned Beaconsfield Dental recognition as an environmentally conscious business.
Ten-Rose International Simmental adopts similar values in an entirely different industry. The enterprise has implemented several strategies as part of their commitment to holistic management of cattle and the land.
Feed efficiency plays an important role in the business. DNA testing is used to identify high feed efficient cattle, meaning less energy is required in the production of beef. The testing also makes for a valuable commodity – cattle buyers prioritise high feed efficiency when purchasing cows.
The business also places a high importance on preserving the habitat of native flora and fauna. They have developed and fenced off a native reserve on the farm, now protected by a Federal Native Title. They plan to plant 10,000 native trees over the next few years.
Kirsten and David Bak own K. and D. Bak Painting and Decorating and have not only been nominated for their environmentally-friendly business practices but also in the trades category of the awards.
K. and D. Bak place a high priority on both the health of their customers and the environment. They steer away from conventional paints which continue to release dangerous solvents after they dry. Instead, the business use zero or low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints in consideration of the continued health of their clients.
The business is also a registered Enviropainter, meaning they have taken an accredited course in sustainable painting practices. They have accreditation as a HIA Greensmart Professional, accreditation as a GreenPainter and accreditation in implementing safe lead paint and asbestos work practices.
The winner of the Environmental Sustainability Award will be announced at a gala dinner on 22 October.
