POLICE and the CFA were called to a raging fire at the abandoned Endeavour Hills Secondary College site last Thursday night, which destroyed the former school’s gymnasium.
The blaze broke out at the 30 metres by 60 metres Amalfi Drive building about 11.45pm on Thursday.
The cause of the fire was yet to be determined but an arson chemist attended the scene on Friday and the Casey CIU is investigating the incident.
There were no reports of injuries.
Brigades from Dandenong, Hallam, Casey, Hampton Park, Narre Warren, Frankston and Scoresby – roughly 14 trucks in total – attended the fire.
It’s understood the blaze took an hour to bring under control, and a further three hours to extinguish completely.
“Firefighters had some difficulty getting water so they called for specialised hoses and numerous pumping appliances for support, which made a huge difference to how quickly we were able to bring the fire under control,” Operations Officer Paul Carrigg said.
“The building was detached to the other parts of the school, so the fire was contained to one building.”
